How to set up Zoho Mail SMTP

  1. Zoho Mail → Settings → Mail Accounts → make sure IMAP/SMTP access is enabled for the account.
  2. With 2FA on, create an app password in accounts.zoho.com → Security → App Passwords.
  3. App settings: host smtp.zoho.com (or your region's host), port 465 SSL/TLS (or 587 STARTTLS), username = full address, password = app password.
  4. Send a test from the same From address as the account.

Sending limits

  • Free and Mail Lite plans have low daily caps per user (Zoho documents limits per plan; free-plan organisations are limited to tens to a few hundred messages per day) and per-hour caps against burst sending.
  • Zoho enforces that the From address is the authenticated account or a configured alias — otherwise 553 Relaying disallowed.
  • Transactional application mail is what Zoho ZeptoMail is for; Zoho Mail SMTP is meant for human mail.

Things that catch people out

  • Using smtp.zoho.com for an account hosted in the EU data centre fails: use smtp.zoho.eu.
  • Group/alias addresses need "Send mail as" configured before they work as From.
